Type effectiveness guide

Know what hits hard.

A quick reference for attack types, dual-type multipliers, and the rules that change between the mainline games, Pokémon TCG, and Pokémon GO.

single weakness
double weakness
½×single resistance
mainline immunity

Dual-type Pokémon multiply both matchups: 2× and 2× becomes 4×, while a 0× immunity stays at zero.

Different rules

TCG and GO notes

The chart above is the mainline game chart. These two formats use type advantages differently, so use the notes below before applying the numbers to a card or a GO battle.

Pokémon TCG

There is no universal type chart

card-specific

In the paper TCG, each Pokémon card prints its own Weakness and Resistance. A Fire card is not automatically weak to Water just because that is true in the video games, so check the defending card instead of using the mainline row.

  • Weakness uses the modifier printed on the card, often ×2.
  • Resistance uses the amount printed on the card, often −30 in modern cards.
  • There is no universal type immunity; Weakness and Resistance normally apply to the Active Pokémon, not the Bench.

Pokémon GO

Same relationships, different math

GO values

GO keeps the same type relationships shown above, but it does not use 2× and ½× damage. Its effectiveness steps are:

1.6×single weakness
2.56×double weakness
0.625×single resistance
≈0.39×immunity-style matchup

So Normal → Ghost is 0× in the mainline games, but an immunity-style extra resistance in GO—not a true zero-damage hit. Dual-type modifiers still stack.
